COURSE BENEFITS
One of the most important skills you will need to adapt to life in Canada is to speak English or French. Once you learn one or both of these languages, you will find it easier to get a job, to understand Canada and to communicate with your children, who will be busy learning English or French at school. Knowing both languages is strongly encouraged because bilingualism makes it easier to integrate into Canadian society, especially into the labour force.
Course Objectives
LINC Level 1-6 students will:
- improve their language skills (as per the LINC Curriculum Guidelines and Canadian Language Benchmark standards)
- develop a better understanding of Canadian society and culture
- adapt to a new culture and lessen stress/culture shock
- learn how to access community resources
- benefit from improved access to continuing education
- work on goal-setting and career planning
- develop skills to cope with real-world challenges
- develop a network for employment opportunities
Methodology
Students receive focused and thematic language instructions based on the LINC Curriculum Guidelines and Canadian Language Benchmarks. Teachers and students develop monthly learning plans clearly identifying learning objectives, skills and language focus. Our programming is learner-centered and task-based and we integrate community resources into our curriculum. Our participatory program makes best use of guest speakers and field trips.
Who Should Attend?
LINC students must meet the following criteria:
- Be a permanent resident of Canada, or Convention Refugee, or be a person in Canada whose application for Permanent Resident status is being processed in Canada and who has been informed by a letter from Citizenship and Immigration Canada of the initial approval of your application subject to an admissibility assessment (this means you have approval-in-principle)
- Be of legal school-leaving age within your province or territory (in Ontario, age 18)
- Take a language assessment test at a Language Assessment Centre, to figure out which level is right for you.
