This paper provides an overview of the current thinking and literature on the increasingly pressing topic of unconscious bias.
Corporations and service providers are moving along the diversity continuum into the realm of inclusion—this is driving the need for more in-depth research to further their journey. Being aware of the existence and implications of unconscious bias is an important step along that advanced journey. This paper will provide an overview of the current thinking and literature from leading academics on this increasingly pressing topic. It will inform both the layperson and the advanced diversity practitioner on the current and historical research on unconscious bias, along with poignant examples of how it plays out in interactions with others. By defining and demystifying the key terms, and exploring the rationale for—and role of—unconscious bias in our evolution, this article will illuminate the functioning of unconscious bias in our workplaces. In summation, the article will help the reader to understand how to leverage, and manage, these unconscious biases towards the creation of more inclusive workplaces, as well as indicate the implications of these findings for the role of diversity practitioners.
